Members of Hands and Hearts with Haiti from Wisconsin are from several parishes in Green Bay & at Pulaski. This includes St. Matthew Catholic Community. Most of us had traveled to Haiti with medical mission groups but were not medical personnel.
It was on the medical mission trips that we met and worked with a group from Cleveland Ohio who also were not medical personnel. When Father Leveque Bien-Aime was visiting friends in Cleveland he invited them to join him at his new parish assignment in Mirebalais and it’s rural chapel parishes. His invitation was an answer to prayer as those in Cleveland and us in Green Bay had spent the previous year discussing, praying and discerning how to serve our sisters and brothers in Haiti.
This invitation and the timing of it made clear to us that joining Father Leveque in Mirebalais was where our abilities would fit and allow us to partner with him working to realize his focus on education and sustainability for the people. This was the birth of Hands and Hearts with Haiti in 2012.
