Finding Hope Amid Chaos: A New Future for Haiti

By Mary Zenczak

After many visits to Haiti, one lasting impression continues to inspire me: the unwavering faith of the Haitian people in the promise of a better tomorrow. In the face of political coups, natural disasters, and unimaginable hardship, their resilience is a living testament to the power of prayer, faith, strength, and hope. Nowhere is this more evident than in the parish community of Noyau, where Hands and Hearts with Haiti (HHH) of St. Matthews, Wisconsin and Assumption Parish, Ohio has partnered in mission and ministry since 2012.

For over two years, armed gangs have dominated the capital, Port-au-Prince, cutting off vital access to transportation and communication. Yet in the rural community of Noyau, life remained relatively stable—churches held services, schools continued to educate, agricultural projects progressed, and the HHH goat initiative thrived. But traveling to the capital was out of the question; the threat of violence and kidnapping made it too dangerous. People stayed close to home.

Then came March 31, 2025—a turning point that shook even the most remote areas. Gangs invaded the nearby city of Mirebalais. With little warning, families fled to the mountains or sought refuge in the larger city of Hinche. Both Mirebalais and Noyau were ransacked. Tragically, two religious sisters at St. Thérèse School in Mirebalais remained behind to protect their school and—were killed by the gangs.

And yet, there is still hope.

Five months later, hope is slowly being restored. Father Romel and Father Reginald, our parish priests,  are now safely housed in Hinche with our former pastor, Father Leveque. Many displaced residents from Mirebalais and Noyau are living in makeshift tents or have been welcomed into local homes. With your help, both priests are regularly distributing food and basic necessities—much of it secured from the Dominican Republic. Thanks to your continued generosity, Hands and Hearts with Haiti is giving them the resources to serve, to rebuild, and above all—to bring hope.

The priests remain optimistic. Local militias and police forces in Mirebalais are making strides in regaining control. Frs. Romel and Reginald believe they may return as early as September to begin rebuilding their parish life. Their top priority: restoring the churches and schools that anchor their communities.

How can you be part of this hope?

  1. Pray—for peace in Haiti and for all regions affected by violence and injustice.
  2. Share the story—let others know about the courage and faith of our Haitian partners.
  3. Support the mission—every donation to our parish communities in Ohio and Wisconsin goes directly to Noyau and Mirebalais.
  4. Pray unceasingly—for the intercession of Jesus and Mary on behalf of our brothers and sisters in need.

Thank you for your continued support of our Haitian partners. Your compassion brings light in their darkest hours and keeps the promise of hope alive.

With gratitude,
